Beyond the Surface: See You in San Antonio

Three weeks from now, we'll have members and suppliers from across the country together in one room in San Antonio for the 2026 AHSG & Commercial USA Member Summit, September 20–23 at the JW Marriott San Antonio Hill Country Resort & Spa. This is our first full member Summit since Naples two years ago, and it's shaping up to be our biggest yet: 60+ trusted partners, 44 exhibit booths, and five featured speakers taking the stage — keynote Jon Petz, ITR Economics' Tara Bayke, industry executive Marco Ludwig, interior designer, TV host, and style influencer Jennifer Farrell, and AI growth expert Ford Saeks.

OI'll be sharing this year's theme — Beyond the Surface — when we open the Summit, along with an update on just how much this network has grown since we were last all together. A customer judges a floor on what they can see and touch, but the real value is underneath that: the relationship behind the recommendation, the training behind the install, the trust behind the brand. That's the substance we'll be digging into.

We're also excited to welcome two new suppliers into the group: Maxxon and JENGAI. Both will be out on the exhibit floor in San Antonio — make sure to stop by and meet them.

If you're registered, get ready. If you're not, there's still time to join us. Either way — see you in San Antonio.

San Antonio Is Calling

The 2026 Member Summit Is Almost Here

The wait is nearly over. This month, AHSG and Commercial USA members, aligned suppliers, and industry partners from across the country will gather in San Antonio for the 2026 Member Summit, September 20–23.

Hosted at the JW Marriott San Antonio Hill Country Resort & Spa, Beyond the Surface will bring our network together for three days of fresh ideas, meaningful conversations, and new opportunities for independent flooring businesses.

Attendees will hear from five featured speakers offering timely perspectives on leadership, economic trends, strategic thinking, brand building, and artificial intelligence: keynote speaker and emcee Jon Petz, ITR Economics’ Tara Bayke, industry executive Marco Ludwig, acclaimed designer and television personality Jennifer Farrell, and AI growth expert Ford Saeks. Commercial and residential panels, association updates, and peer conversations will add even more insight throughout the Summit.

With more than 44 exhibit booths, and two Supplier Showcase sessions, attendees will have dedicated time to explore new products, services, and technology while strengthening the relationships that make this network so valuable.

The experience extends beyond the meeting room with a Welcome Reception, shared meals, cocktails, and live music. Tuesday afternoon offers time for championship golf at TPC San Antonio, spa experiences, or enjoying the resort before the Summit concludes with the evening’s Dinner & Recognition celebration.

After two years, it is almost time to reconnect, celebrate, and look toward what comes next. All roads lead to San Antonio this month, and we cannot wait to welcome you.

WEBER COMMERCIAL MARKET WATCH

The Projects Are Out There. The Key Is Knowing Where to Look.

July’s construction indicators point to continued pressure in the near term, but a growing pipeline could create meaningful opportunities for independent flooring dealers and commercial contractors.

Projects Are Taking Longer to Move Forward

The latest market data delivers a mixed but important message: projects are still being discussed and planned, but many are taking longer to become signed contracts and active jobs.

The AIA/Deltek Architecture Billings Index fell from 47.3 in June to 46.6 in July. Any score below 50 indicates declining billings at architecture firms, which can signal fewer projects advancing toward construction. The downturn has now lasted nearly three and a half years, making it the longest period of declining business conditions in the index’s history.

Conditions remained soft across every region and project category. The South continued to outperform the rest of the country with a score of 48.7, followed by the West at 47.8, the Midwest at 46.7, and the Northeast at 44.8.

What This Means for Flooring Businesses

For independent flooring dealers and commercial contractors, this softness may appear as delayed projects, longer bidding cycles, greater competition, and customers taking more time to make decisions.

There is still demand in the market. Project inquiries remained in positive territory at 52.6, indicating that clients continue to explore new work. However, the design contracts index fell to 47.2, showing that many of those conversations have not yet become signed projects.

The opportunity has not disappeared. It is simply taking longer to move through the pipeline. That makes disciplined follow-up and strong relationships with architects, designers, general contractors, property managers, and developers increasingly important.

Where Opportunity Is Building

The longer-term outlook offers more encouragement. The Dodge Momentum Index rose 6.9% in July, with commercial planning increasing 4.1% and institutional planning climbing 13.1%. Compared with July 2025, the overall index was up 11.7%.

Data centers continue to drive much of the commercial increase. Without them, commercial planning would have been down 16.2% from the previous year. Institutional growth, however, was more widespread.

Education, healthcare, recreation, religious, and public-building projects all gained momentum in July. These sectors can represent significant flooring opportunities, particularly for contractors with the certifications, installation capabilities, product knowledge, and supplier relationships needed to compete for specialized work.

Because the Dodge Momentum Index typically leads nonresidential construction spending by 12 to 18 months, today’s planning growth could begin producing more active opportunities in late 2027.

Position Your Business Now

The message for members is clear: protect today’s business while preparing for tomorrow’s projects.

Stay close to your local pipeline, follow projects early, and remain visible to the people making product and specification decisions. Dealers serving commercial, multifamily, and builder markets should also consider where their capabilities could translate into the institutional sectors now showing stronger planning activity.

The market remains challenging, but the planning data shows that work is developing beneath the surface. The businesses that identify those opportunities early and remain engaged throughout the planning process will be best positioned when those projects begin moving forward.

CLĪMIT Adds Smarter Weather Planning and Automated Heat Monitoring

New tools help contractors plan weather-sensitive work and simplify jobsite documentation.

From scheduling pours to protecting temperature-sensitive installations, weather conditions can quickly change the course of a project. CLĪMIT has introduced two new features that give contractors greater visibility into upcoming conditions while reducing manual recordkeeping.

7-Day NOAA Weather Forecasts bring forecast highs and lows directly into each project dashboard. Using National Weather Service data, teams can plan installations, pours, and other weather-sensitive work without checking multiple forecasting sites project by project.

Heat Index Recording automatically captures hourly, timestamped conditions across multiple jobsite zones. The continuous record helps California construction and warehouse operators support Cal/OSHA heat-related documentation requirements—without relying on manual temperature logs.

Additional capabilities include:

  • Multi-zone monitoring from one dashboard
  • Mobile access to live and historical conditions
  • Acclimatization tracking for new and returning workers
  • Historical trends to help identify high-risk periods

Both features are now available to CLĪMIT customers.

How One Flooring Dealer Found Growth Hiding in Plain Sight

The right growth opportunity is not always something new. Sometimes, it is already within the business, waiting to be recognized.

On What’s Underfoot, Steven Wright of Flooring Direct DFW joins Brian Preuss to share the strategies behind the company’s growth. Steven explains how applying the 80/20 rule helped his team focus on the products customers actually buy and how building relationships with 40–50 real estate offices across Dallas-Fort Worth helped grow the realtor channel to roughly 20–25% of the company’s business.

Steven also reflects on his career in flooring, the value of understanding how customers want to shop and how dyslexia became what he considers a professional superpower.

For independent flooring professionals, this episode offers an honest, practical look at sharpening your focus, strengthening referral channels and uncovering opportunities hiding in plain sight.
